I wonder if the satellite takes multiple pictures for different colors and then produces a composite image. If the pictures are taken at slightly different times (as they might if using the same optics with different sensors or filters), then fast moving objects could appear as multiple images.
Thats actually pretty impressive. Consider that the airplane is probably going 150-200 MPH (240-320 KPH) and the airplane isn’t very blurry. Assuming they are using very high resolution CCDs it may be as simple as starting sampling scans from different sides of the sensor.
You are correct about your assumption, while I don’t have every detail, I do know that some cameras use three different filters individually to take photos and make them into a composite, as you said.

It looks over-exposed because the plane is so shiny. There is a lack of glorious rainbow action just to the left of the vertical tail fin, right where its shadow is. I think the color components (RGB) recover at different rates like eyes do.
It probably has to do with the really short amount of time that the shutter was open, and with the plane being white, and thus its light is composed of every other color.
i found one the other day. do a google maps search for “lake intervale, nj” and you can see it on the left hand side of the lake.
i9 have a feeling that the strange colors of it are simply due to the speed of the plane and hte fact that it is horribly out of focus. the satellite image is focused at the ground, not the plane 30,000 ft over it…
